Studying the Eagle Ford Shale
Pioneer strives to create beneficial, constructive change through its operations in South Texas, and the resulting economic impact is significant for area communities. Released in May of 2012, a baseline study titled “The Economic Impact of the Eagle Ford Shale,” by the Center for Community and Business Research at the University of Texas at San Antonio, outlines the remarkable influence the oil and gas industry has had in the Eagle Ford Shale play, contributing $25 billion in total economic output.
The study concluded that, in 2011, shale development:
- paid $3.1 billion in salaries and benefits to workers,
- provided more than $12.6 billion in gross regional product,
- added more than $358 million in state revenues, including $120.4 million in severance taxes,
- and spurred a triple-digit sales tax revenue increase in various local counties.
What’s more, the increased revenue from the Eagle Ford Shale operations provides funding for new resources throughout the area, such as schools and hospitals, which would, in turn, create a projected 117,000 full-time jobs. These conclusions offer a glimpse of potential future regional success and illustrate the power and possibilities behind the community partnership.
